In the twelfth century ,Hōnen Genkū(1133-1212)had a dream in which he met the Chinese monk Shan-tao(613-681). When Hōnen asked why the Chinese master hadappeared , he learned it was because of Hōnen’s devotion to the nembutsu chant ‘Namu Amida Buddha’.Hōnen later commissioned a painter to depict this dream, which represents a transmission of doctrine to the founder of the Pure Land sect in Japan . As explained by the authors of the exhibition catalogue cited above , the painting is a rare and wondrous document of a faith in which it was believed that the simple repetition of the name of Amida Buddha would lead the believer to the Western Paradise .

Accompanying the painting is a later calligraphic inscription which represents the final testament of Hōnen to his followers . It recounts , in part:

The method of final salvation that I have propounded is neither a sort of meditation , such as has been practiced by many scholars in China and Japan, nor isit repetiton of the Buddha’s name by those who have studied and understood the deep meaning of it . It is nothing  but the mere repetition of the ‘Namu Amida Butsu’ without a doubt of his mercy , whereby one may be born into the Land of Perfect Bliss.

Hōnen’s pure Land sect was to become the most popular form Buddhism in Japan until the presen day . This unusual painting is a remarkable testament to the beauty of the deeply felt religious beliefs of medieval Japan .
